What is the best secondary school in Lagos State?
Nigeria has many great schools, and a lot of them can actually be found in Lagos State. We have previously reported on top 10 public schools in Lagos State, but this time we are going to focus only on the best of the best. Why, you might ask?
Well, it is because the top spot is occupied by a secondary school that is boys only, so we think that it just would not be fair to the girls. For this reason, we are going to talk about the best secondary school in Lagos for boys, as well as about a similar educational institution for girls. Let’s get to it!
King’s College, Lagos
It will probably come as a surprise to no one that the best state school in Lagos State is King’s College. For years, this establishment occupied the top positions on all sorts of lists and remained one of the best secondary schools in Nigeria. King’s College was established on 20th September 1909, as King’s School. Initially, it had only 10 students and it was located not far from Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island. Today, its main campus can be found on 3 Catholic Mission St. on the same Lagos Island, while the annex campus is at Adeyemo Alakija St. on Victoria Island.
King’s College has some of the most dedicated and highly qualified teachers. The teacher-to-student ratio is the impressive 1 to 15. No wonder the students of King’s College always show impressive results on examinations, including WASSCE.
However, apart from providing top-notch education to its students, it also has a lot of other activities to offer. Its main focus is sports, so the students can enjoy playing cricket, football, squash, badminton, table tennis and basketball while at school.

This College was established almost two decades after King’s College, as it opened its doors on October 10, 1927 to its first 20 students. That said, just like its ‘brother’, Queen’s College remains one of the oldest and best educational institutions for girls in Nigeria.
These days, over 300 teachers provide quality education for around 3,000 students. Overall, over 200,000 students have graduated from the College since its establishment. Thanks to the experienced teachers and other staff members, students of Queen’s College have been able to score the highest marks at examinations for many years.
The school can be found at Birrel Ave, Yaba, where it offers some of the best boarding and sporting facilities in the country. Girls can express themselves in the activities of their choice. In addition to that, students can feel extra safe due to the visible security on the premises.
