– Arsene Wenger is set to lose his position as Arsenal head coach this summer over poor run of results from his team

– They are 6th on the EPL log and a chance for them to play in Europe is in doubt except if they win the Europa League this summer

– However, former Liverpool midfielder has told the Gunners to sign current Newcastle United manager as Wenger’s replacement when this season wraps up next month

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged Arsenal to hire Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez as Arsene Wenger’s replacement this summer.

The French born tactician has been heavily criticized following the Gunners poor result in the domestic league this season.

They are also sixth on the EPL table with 54 points from 33 matches – five more to the end of the current league season.

Meanwhile, their chances of playing in Europe next season are not looking very bright should the season end this way on the log, except if they win this year’s Europa League title next month.

The Emirates Stadium side defeated Russian side CSKA Moscow 6-3 on aggregate to in the quarterfinal stage to set up a difficult semi final meeting with Atletico Madrid.

However, Arsenal fans are still not pleased with Wenger with how low he has brought the team in recent time – thereby will still expect him to leave at the end of the season even if he wins the UEFA second tier title in May.

Over the weekend, the Gunners surrendered their seven match unbeaten run in all competitions after failing to go past the Magpies at the St. James Park.

Their last defeat further compounded the Gunners woes and are on course for their worst EPL finish in a long time – a result that might jeopardise Wenger’s position at the club this summer.

He told talkSPORT: “He (Benitez) is exactly what Arsenal need.

“I heard Paul Merson talking on the Sports Breakfast, saying Arsenal fans want a certain style of play and want to see a team play expansive football.

“But they do that now and they get murdered. I only worked with him (Benitez) briefly, but he was bang on it.

“He was all about ‘This is what we’re going to do and this is how we’re going to do it’. You know exactly what you’re doing.

“He is a calm manager but he’s very assertive. You wouldn’t want to cross him, he’s got a real ruthlessness about him.”

The Gunners are 13 points adrift of the top four with their only route into the Champions League next season is winning the Europa League.

Wenger joined Arsenal from Nagoya Grampus Eight in 1996, and has won three Premier League titles for the Gunners during his 22-year reign at the club.

He has clinched the FA Cup title and the Community Shield seven times each, but has never won the English League Cup.
