How Buhari is laying the foundation for economic growth – Fashola

– The minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, describes the Apapa-Wharf road as the blood vessels that serviced all activities in the ports

– Fashola says the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki-Ojota expressway was constructed between 1975 and 1978 and has not been expanded since then

– The minister states that the two major ports in the nation had been overstretched, as they were designed to take 30 million metric tons but now took over 80 million metric tonnes of cargo

The minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, said on Saturday, November 17, that President Muhammadu Buhari was laying the foundation for economic growth of Nigeria through infrastructure renewal.

Fashola said this during an inspection of the Apapa-Wharf Road reconstruction project and flag-off of the reconstruction of the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki-Ojota expressway in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Apapa-Wharf road Reconstruction project was done by AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd and financed by the Dangote Group, Nigerian Ports Authority and Flour Mills of Nigeria.

The Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki-Ojota expressway project, on the other hand, was awarded to the Dangote Group.

Fashola described port access roads as “blood vessels” that serviced all activities in the ports

He said they had, however, been abandoned alongside various federal highways by previous governments.

The minister said that the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki-Ojota expressway was constructed between 1975 and 1978 and had not been expanded since then.

He said that the major highways had been abandoned by previous administrations until President Buhari picked up the initiative to turn things around.

President Buhari is laying the foundation for economic growth that would release economic prosperity, create jobs. It is this road that releases the opportunity,” Fashola said.

He thanked Dangote for investing in the development of Nigeria, pointing out that, four of Dangote’s firms paid about N22 billion as annual taxes to the federal government.

The minister said that the two major ports in the nation had been overstretched, as they were designed to take 30 million metric tons but now took over 80 million metric tonnes of cargo.

He said that the federal government was planning the construction of the Lekki and Badagry Sea Ports to complement the two major ones, to ease port congestion.

Fashola appealed for patience of the road users as construction work commenced.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos while delivering his speech said that the project was the real Lagos solution to the problem of gridlock in the state.

He said that interconnectivity of rail, road and water transportation was important.

Ambode commended the federal government for its efforts in reviving the railway in conjunction with road projects to address gridlock, saying it would bring relief to residents of the state.

“We are happy that this project has finally commenced,” he said.

He promised to increase deployment of traffic and law enforcement agencies to the route to ensure smooth execution of the project.

Senator Kabiru Gaya, chairman Senate committee on works, said that concrete should be adopted for road construction in the nation as it lasted more, to tackle the huge deficit in roads infrastructure.

Also, Senator Oluremi Tinubu said that the construction would solve the problem on flooding of the highway.

“The project will reduce stress of commuting for us all,” she said.

President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, while delivering a vote of thanks, commended the Federal Government for adoption of the Road Trust Fund, which gave the private sector opportunity to participate in infrastructure renewal.

Dangote said that the nation was losing huge revenue due to bad roads and assured that his firm would pay “special attention” to the reconstruction of the highway by doing good quality job.

He also thanked government for the proposed Lekki ports project and thanked other stakeholders and ministry officials for efforts in completing the Apapa Wharf Road Reconstruction project.

Dangote promised to deliver the Apapa-Oshodi-Oworonshoki-Ojota Expressway project ahead of schedule.

We will not disappoint you (Fashola) and Nigerians; we will make sure we do the best job.

“We are advocating rigid pavement not because we sell cement but because we want to give Nigerians the best,” Dangote said.

Representatives of Apapa and Ajegunle Residents Association, Truck Drivers and owners unions and various stakeholders took turns to commend the project and the economic development it will bring to Lagos and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Julius Berger, a construction company in Nigeria, has given an assurance that the Lagos-Ibadan expressway would be completed by 2021, The Punch reports.

The company made this known through its operational manager, Thamm Olaf, during a meeting with Senator Kabiru Gaya-led Senate committee on works held on Sunday, November 11.

Stephen Colbert reveals why he returned to Catholicism after losing his faith

Late night television host Stephen Colbert is open about his faith but revealed in an interview that he lost it and became an atheist before returning to Catholicism.

The CBS star told Father James Martin on his Catholic talk show “Faith in Focus” on Thursday night that there was a time in his life he turned away from God. However, a moment in 1986, when he was 22 years old, changed his mind while walking down the street in Chicago.

“I had lost my faith in God, to my great grief,” he explained. “I was sort of convinced that I had been wrong all this time that I had been taught something that wasn’t true.”

That day, while walking, a person handed the comedian a book.

POLITICS ON LATE NIGHT: STEPHEN COLBERT RIDICULES PRESIDENT TRUMP’S MEDAL OF FREEDOM PICKS

“And I was walking down the street and somebody handed me a little, green New Testament Proverbs and Psalms,” he said.

“The Late Show” host said he had to crack the Bible open in order to read it because it was so cold outside.

“And I open it up to a little glossary in the front and it said verses to read based upon if you [have] anxiety,” he said.

He recalled the passage being from Matthew Chapter 5. The comedian said he immediately felt “lightened” after reading the passage.

“For the first time I understood the real meaning of the phrase, it spoke to me. Like it read off the page. The words of Christ read off the page. There was no effort. I stood on that street corner in the cold and read that sermon. And my life has never been the same,” Colbert said.

David Foster’s fiancée, Katharine McPhee, posts ‘Meet the Fosters’ Thanksgiving photo

Katharine McPhee is getting ready for Thanksgiving with fiancé David Foster and his family.

On Friday, the former “American Idol” star posted a Photoshopped “Meet the Fosters” Instagram photo – a play on the famous comedy, “Meet the Fockers” movie cover – featuring her fiancé and his daughters, Sara, 37; Erin, 36; Amy, 45; Jordan, 32; and Allison, 48.

“Coming this Thanksgiving day 🦃,” she captioned the family photo where her head can be seen Photoshopped on top the body sitting on the lap of a Photoshopped Foster.

The picture also included the line, “Mommy’s home,” under the “Meet the Fosters” title.

According to ET, Foster’s daughter Amy commented on McPhee’s Instagram and said, “I love the part in the film when you formally adopt us. So emotional.”

The 34-year-old soon-to-be Mrs. Foster replied, “I know. That was such a good note you gave the director. Really effective.”

Since announcing the news of their engagement over the summer, Foster and McPhee have not shied away from displaying their love to the world. Despite their 34-year age difference, the couple has been quick to slam the haters and continue to pack on the PDA.

Earlier in the month, the pair posed for photos while attending The Israel Defense Forces Western Region Gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel where they were seen getting cozy with one another. The couple was later snapped sharing a kiss, with Foster’s arm around McPhee during the event.

Prior to attending the evening gala, the May-December couple stepped out to celebrate Foster’s 69th birthday. The pair reportedly celebrated the music producer’s day of birth with a casual lunch date in Los Angeles.

McPhee was seen donning a floral ensemble on Thursday afternoon while walking alongside her soon-to-be husband.

Back in September, the musical couple spoke out about their age gap and said that they don’t care what people have to say about their age difference.

“It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people, but it does to us,” McPhee told People last month. “He has things to learn from me and I have a lot of things to learn from him, so I think we have a nice yin and yang.”

The couple met for the first time in 2006 when the music master served as a mentor for the then-contestant on “American Idol”. After gaining fame post-“American Idol,” Foster helped to produce McPhee’s first single.

“She didn’t catch my eye on the first day because I was so busy trying to do my job,” Foster admitted. “But, the reality is that in the last 12 years I’ve always had a connection with her.”

Don’t let governors mislead you on N30,000 minimum wage – Labour tells Buhari

– Ayuba Wabba, the president of the NLC, says threat by governors to sack workers over N30, 000 is a mere distraction on the issue

– Wabba notes that labour is determined more than ever before to ensure that workers received decent pay

– The labour leader said workers the figure of N30,000 after considering the high inflation rate, the poor purchasing power of naira among other variables

Labour leaders on Saturday, November 17, repeated their advice to President Muhammadu Buhari not to be misled by some governors on the new minimum wage demand by Nigerian workers.

Speaking during a working visit to Ado Ekiti, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, said there was no going back on the amount submitted to the federal government by labour.

He described the threat by governors that paying N30, 000 as minimum wage would result to retrenchments as mere distraction by the governors on the issue.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that labour and the governors have been at odds, following the persistent demand by the former that public sector workers in Nigeria should be paid a “decent wage’’.

Analysts have criticized the Nigerian government over the low pay of civil servants in the top oil exporting nation, where politicians earn some of the biggest wages in the world.

Wabba noted that labour was determined more than ever before to ensure that workers received decent pay, urging unions nationwide to remain resolute in their wage increase demands.

The labour chief, who was in Ado Ekiti to attend the 75th birthday celebration of a former chairman of the Ekiti state chapter of the Medical and Health Union of Nigeria, Johnson Ogunseeyin, described the governors’ position as reckless and heartless.

“I consider the governors’ position as a trick that is not new to us. There is no agitation by labour that never experienced such. So, we consider their position as an afterthought.

“In case they didn’t know, labour started with a proposal of N66, 000. So N30, 000 was a midway approach to resolve the crisis.

“We didn’t just request for it, we considered the high inflation rate, the poor purchasing power of naira among other variables.

READ ALSO: 2019: PDP reportedly in dilemma on how to woo southwest to vote for Atiku

“While we commend about six governors for saying they will pay N30, 000 minimum wage, we challenge those saying they can’t pay to go to their states and tell workers and pensioners that they can’t pay.

“This agitation started in November last year, even when the review was supposed to take place in 2016. The governors were asked to send memoranda and only 21 states complied.

We want to tell the governors that we won’t succumb to their antics. We will receive nothing less than N30, 000 minimum wage for our people and we have directed workers to vote out any governor or his successor, who says he is not ready to pay,’’ said the labour leader.

Earlier, Wabba described Ogunseeyin as one of the few patriots and unionists, who fought for improved welfare of Nigerian workers.

In a speech, the Ekiti State Head of Service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka, appealed to workers to make productivity their watchwords, to boost nation growth.

Many labour leaders, including the chairman of the NLC in Ekiti, Ade Adesanmi, attended the event.

Meanwhile, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has said that Nigeria can afford to pay wages and called on governors to do their duties.

The Nation reports that the former governor said non-payment of salaries leads to low production.

He said when he was governor, he reiterated to his colleagues that salaries was a means of enhancing the potential of the states.

Oshiomhole, however, said one problem the country faced was the issue of money being stolen in the name of salaries.

Courtney Stodden says she’d ‘rather go naked than wear Victoria’s Secret’ after exec’s controversial comments

Courtney Stodden is speaking out against Victoria’s Secret after Ed Razek, the brand’s CMO, sparked social media backlash for saying that they “don’t market” to plus-size and transgender women.

After Razek’s controversial remarks, the model took to Instagram to protest the brand, wearing nothing but angel wings in a nude, makeup-free photo. Stodden posed with hands covering her chest and captioned the photo with a powerful message.

“After Edward Razek’s comments about ALL women and what the brand reflects,” she wrote. “I’d rather go naked than wear Victoria’s Secret. Ladies, wear your wings proud. We’re all unique AND beautiful.”

Razek opened up about the famous lingerie brand’s image in a recent interview with Vogue.

“Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should,’ Razek told the outlet. ‘Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special. That’s what it is.”

He added, “But we’re nobody’s third love. We’re their first love. And Victoria’s Secret has been women’s first love from the beginning.”

The exec then stated that Victoria’s Secret “would cast a transgender model” in the famous runway show but those who have come to casting “didn’t make it.”

And like many who have been protesting the brand since Razek’s comments, Stodden also clapped back at Victoria’s Secret, reminding women to embrace different body types while praising her own person 25-pound weight gain.

“I can’t stress ENOUGH how much better I feel with an extra 25 pounds,” the model revealed in a recent side-by-side, before-and-after Instagram post.

“The left picture was taken in 2013– I weighed 100 pounds,” she continued. “I never really meant to stay skinny by law but I think it was subconsciously branded inside of my head that THIN is IN. But the funny part is, I was my MOST INSECURE Now, 5 years later, at 125 pounds… I’m so much healthier,” Stodden added. “I’m so much HAPPIER and I feel my sexiest just be happy everyone and PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT CONFORM (especially if it’s subconscious) #curves #liveyourbestlife.”

The 24-year-old who now has a newfound love for her curves, gained notoriety in 2011 when she married “Green Mile” actor Doug Hutchison, 58, when she was just 16 years old. The pair were married for seven years until Stodden officially filed for divorce in March.

Now the model works as an advocate for body positivity, urging women not succumb to the pressures of unrealistic body standards.

Last month, Stodden revealed on Instagram that she is “learning to love food” after years of starving herself to maintain a certain image.

“I used to starve myself,” she wrote.”I’m learning to love food. Of course there’s a balance … with everything in life — but b—-, I’m gonna eat. #eat.”

Kim Porter’s death brings Diddy and ex-girlfriend Cassie back together

Just one day after the death of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex Kim Porter, the music mogul stepped out with his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura.

On Friday, Diddy was spotted out in Los Angeles for the first time following the news that Porter was found dead in her Toluca Lake home on Thursday.

The Ciroc founder was casually dressed in red basketball shorts and a black hoodie which read “Do The Right Thing” when he was snapped stepping out a silver vehicle. Ventura, who dated Diddy on and off for nearly a decade before splitting with him a month ago, subtly matched her ex’s casual style wearing a black, oversized sweatshirt with leggings and sneakers.

A source told E! News that the “Me and You” singer “reached out to Diddy” by “sending him a text message checking up on him and expressing her condolences” following the news of Porter’s death. The former couple, who reportedly had an “amicable” breakup, have remained friends despite the end of their romantic relationship.

Diddy’s rep, Cindi Berger, confirmed Porter’s death to Fox News on Thursday.

“Sadly, I can confirm the passing of Kim Porter. I ask that you give the families privacy at this time,” she to us.

The model-actress, who dated Diddy for 13 years and has three children — 11-year-old twin daughters, Jessie James and D’Lila, and son Christian Combs, 20 — with the music mogul and businessman, was found dead on Thursday, per TMZ. She also shared 27-year-old son Quincy from her previous relationship with R&B singer Al B. Sure!

According to TMZ, citing law enforcement sources, police received a call to Porter’s Los Angeles home around noon. Per the site, the 911 call reported “a patient in cardiac arrest.”

A source also told the outlet that Porter had been suffering from “flu-like symptoms” for several weeks, but it’s still unclear how she died.

Along with her modeling career, Porter appeared in the TV series “Wicked Wicked Games” as well as Diddy’s VH1 show “I Want to Work for Diddy.”

The Sean Jean designer wasn’t the only person deeply affected by Porter’s sudden death.

Several celebrities, from Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Kevin Hart, shared tributes to the late actress and model on social media.

Porter’s ex Al B. Sure! also posted an emotional throwback Instagram post in honor of her passing. The bold black-and-white image was simply captioned “#ForeverMyLady.”

Elections: FG orders security agencies to begin search of private jets, passengers

– Federal government has ordered security agencies to begin search of private jets, passengers

– It was gathered that the search is meant to check illegal move of funds both in local and foreign currencies ahead of 2019 elections

– Security operatives had on Sunday, November 11, searched the private jet of PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar

The federal government may have ordered security agencies to begin search of private jets and their passengers as the 2019 campaigns and other electioneering activities begin.

Punch reports that the security agencies including the operatives of the Department of State Services, Immigration, Customs and the Special Task Force on currency at the nation’s airports and private terminals would soon begin to search every private jet and their occupants before departures and after arrivals.

Legit.ng gathered that the new medium reported that multiple security sources at the Lagos and Abuja airports confirmed the development.

PAY ATTENTION: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

It was reported that they were told that as the 2019 elections were drawing near, intelligence reports had shown that politicians might be trying to move funds both in local and foreign currencies via their private jets or hired planes to prosecute the campaigns and elections.

They said the development informed the decision to search the private jet of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, at the Abuja airport on Sunday, November 11, shortly after his arrival from Dubai where he had gone for vacation.

It was, however, learnt that the decision to search Atiku’s jet was a specific order from the federal government, even though the minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, claimed it was a routine search usually conducted on all arriving passengers.

“Even though it is within our laws that security agencies can search private jets and their occupants, security agencies have not been doing this. It may be because there were no threats in the past.

“What I can say is that the search of Atiku’s jet is political because it is not the usual practice; the chief executive officer of an Abuja-based charter flight operator told our correspondent under condition of anonymity”, the source was quoted to have said.

Meanwhile, the director general of the Nigerian civil aviation authority, the aviation industry regulator, Capt Muktar Usman, said the federal government would beam its searchlight on all private jet terminals and private jet flights as campaigns towards the 2019 elections begin.

He said every election season was usually characterised with increased level of activities in the private and charter jet segment of the aviation sector and the agency would ensure no infraction is committed by any politician, party or charter operator.

Usman said: “We are all aware that as we are approaching the election season, there would be more movements in the private and charter flights segment. We are aware there are more movements, so the monitoring should be more.

“We are taking all those things into consideration. It’s part of our own oversight responsibility and we are taking things very seriously. So, we are monitoring to ensure that standards are met and adhered to.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that days after the security operatives searched the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, on his arrival from Dubai, some former militants berated presidency over the incident.
