Garba Shehu blames opposition for bribery allegation against Kyari, says presidency is being attacked because of 2019 elections

– Garba Shehu has said that the bribery allegation against Abba Kyari is politically-motivated

– The senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, says the allegation is the work of some opponents of the current administration

– Kyari, the chief of staff to the president, was alleged to have received a bribe of N29 million to award a contract

The bribery allegation against the chief of staff to the president, Abba Kyari, has been described by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, as the work of some opponents of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Channels reports that Shehu stated this in an interview he had with the TV station on Sunday, September 9.

NAIJ.com gathers that the chief of staff was alleged to have received a bribe of N29 million to award a contract.

Shehu said: “From our own point of view, we think that the presidency is coming under attack for the fact that we are approaching an election. And this is a government that has maintained a corruption-free image all through.

“We have not suffered any major financial scandal and so the opposition is desperate to stick something on the administration. That’s the way we are looking at it.

“This is an administration that has stopped so much wrongdoing in this country. There is a huge number of citizens who have fed fat on the system without doing just anything to justify their drawing enormous benefit from the nation’s treasury.”

He added: “The President has stopped all of that and the thing that is happening is that people who are being deprived, who have this sense of entitlement that the treasury is their birthright, are just looking for people to hunt and to shoot down.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Malam Abba Kyari, the chief of staff to President Buhari, threatened to sue a national daily over a news story alleging that he collected a N29 million bribe over a contract.

A statement by Malam Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president said Kyari had been left with no other option than to seek legal remedy after the newspaper ignored notifications that the story was false.
