Mama Taraba emerges as UDP governorship candidate for 2019

The former minister of women affairs and social development, Aisha Alhassan, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the United Development Party (UDP) in Taraba state for the 2019 election.

Alhassan, who recently resigned from her ministerial position and her party, All Progressives Congress (APC), defected to UDP on Saturday, September 29, after she was disqualified from contesting fro governorship on the platform of APC, Sahara Reporters reports.

Alhassan, also known as Mama Taraba, was on Tuesday, October 2, declared the winner of the UDP governorship ticket by Olusegun Adeleye, the party’s returning officer and national publicity secretary after she got 246 votes from delegates.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari accepted the resignation of the Alhassan as minister of women affairs.

The president also directed Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, the minister of state, industry, trade and investment, to immediately take charge of the women affairs and social development ministry.

Alhassan hinged her resignation on her disqualification in the screening for the 2019 Taraba state governorship contest by the APC National Working Committee.

Aisha Alhassan was the governorship candidate of the APC in the 2015 election in Taraba state.
