– This was announced by state governor Ajimobi after a meeting with all candidates vying for the party’s governorship ticket
– The governor says all the 26 aspirants prefer the indirect primaries to the direct one recently approved for all positions by the party’s NEC
Channels is reporting that the Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has chosen to pick its candidate for the 2019 governorship election through indirect primaries.
This is contrary to the earlier decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party headed by President Buhari and national chairman Adams Oshiomhole, which urged direct primaries for all positions.
Reports say that Oyo state governor Abiola Ajimobi disclosed this to journalists at the Government House after a consulting with 26 governorship aspirants from the APC.
The meeting which lasted for hours was to foster unity and greater collaboration within the party.
Channels writes that the state governor said all the 26 aspirants present at the meeting approved for indirect primaries as the mode of selection for the party’s candidate.
NAIJ.com reports that indirect primaries is a method where delegates would be picked to choose the candidate who will contest for the governorship seat on the party’s platform in 2019.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported earlier that the major reasons President Muhammadu Buhari gave his total support to the national chairman of the APC Adams Oshiomhole on the direct primaries for choosing candidates ahead of the 2019 elections have been revealed.
A source close to the president said the party adopted the direct primaries after it was convinced that the process would check money politics and help the party choose a popular candidate for the various elections.
Vanguard reports that President Buhari opted for the direct primaries as a direct response to the conduct of APC governorship primaries in Ekiti state where the whole election process was clearly monitised.
