Tension in Plateau as OPSH allegedly detains lawmaker

Troops of the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) – a multi taskforce security command focused on restoring and mainating peace in Plateau state – have allegely arrested and detained a member of the State’s House of Assembly, Peter Gyendeng.

It was gathered that Gyendeng, a lawmaker representing Barikin Ladi constituency was allegedly detained at the command’s headquarters in Jos at about 1 pm today when he attempted negotiating the release of a youth that was arrested by the command about two months ago.

Daily Trust reports that the driver of the lawmaker, Simon Gimba, said his principal left him Barikin Ladi after he said he was going the the OPSH headquarters.

According to him, the lawmaker was at the command to negotiate the bail of one youth arrested in connection with a riot and protest as a result of incessant killings in their community.

He said he (Simon) was notified about the arrest when one of the security detail of the lawmaker called him around 3 pm.

“I rushed to the headquarters but I wasn’t allow to see my boss, some security men at the headquarters told me that they kept him until their commander come back,” Simon said.

Speaking on the mater, the media and officer for the OPSH, Major Adam Umar, said he wasn’t aware of the arrest.

“I am not aware of the arrest, it hasn’t reach my desk, but I will inquire and get back to you,” Major Umar said.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the OPSH had reacted to the secret burial of over 200 victims of the recent Plateau attacks.

He said the state of the corpses was so bad that if allowed to be taken away, it would stir up serious tensions in the state.

However, some have alleged that the secret burial is to cover up some facts and conspiracy of soldiers in the killings.
